EDITING & PROOFREADING
If you are a non-native speaker of English, your text will most certainly benefit from being edited by a professional to guarantee clarity and readability while preserving your voice and tone.
I work primarily at the level of “micro-editing” — line editing, copyediting and proofreading. This is detailed, sentence-level work that examines a text word by word and line by line. Every word is carefully examined — checked against the rules of grammar, syntax, logic, consistency, style and tone — whether it is ultimately changed or not. The words that remain untouched have passed through the same rigorous process as those that are revised.
I will check:
register and style
syntax and sentence length
consistency
key phrases and terminology
grammar
capitalisation, hyphenation, lists, numbers, etc.
footnotes and references
The aim is to ensure the reader is not distracted from your message by errors, inconsistencies or repetition.
I will follow the style guide you specify. If you are not required to apply any particular style rules, I will normally use the Chicago Manual of Style.
Proofreading is the quality control stage, typically the final check before publication. The goal is to spot anything that may have slipped through earlier rounds of revision. If your text is already clear and stylistically sound, I can provide a final read-through to ensure it is completely ready for submission or publication.
If you are not sure which level of editing you need, you can send me your text and I will help you decide.
